Theory and Hazrd Perception Test
As a Learner driver you can start
taking lessons before you take your theory test,
some people mistakenly believe that you need to Pass your theory
test before you can take lessons, this is not the case.
Remember though
you can not apply for your Practical Driving Test until you have
passed your Theory test.
The theory test is undertaken at a
different venue to the practical test.
The section below tells you about the Theory test and what's involved.
The theory test is made up of two parts;
the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. The multiple
choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and a mouse
and the hazard perception part records your responses through the
use of a computer program.
You need to pass both parts to pass
the theory test. If you pass one part and not the other you will
have failed the whole test and be required to take both parts of
the test again.
Multiple Choice
Instructions will be given on how the
test works before the test starts so don't worry if you are not
familiar with computers.
You can even choose to go through a
practice session of the multiple choice questions to get you used
to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the
real test will begin.
A question and several answer options
will appear on the screen and you have to select the correct answer
to the question by touching the screen or by using the mouse.
Remember some questions may require more than one answer.
You will be asked 50 questions
and you can 'flag' questions as well as navigate between
to enable you to go back to questions you are not sure of and look
at them again.
The pass mark for the multiple choice
part of the theory test is 43 out of 50.
After the multiple choice part is over
you can choose to have a break of up to 3 minutes before the Hazard
Perception test will begin.
Hazard Perception
After your break you will be given
a short tutorial video clip about how the Hazard Perception test
works.
The hazard perception test is also
delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on
the mouse.
You will be given a series of 14 video clips which feature every
day road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing
hazard and in one clip there will be two developing hazards.
To achieve a high score you will need
to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its
development. The scores range from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
You will not be able to review your
answers at the end or during the test; therefore you will only have
one chance to respond to the developing hazard(s).
The pass mark is 44 out of 75 for the
car part of the Hazard Perception test.
Conclusion
At the end of the hazard perception
test you will be asked to fill out and answer a number of customer
service questions. You do not have to do this if you do not want
to, and any information given is anonymous and confidential and
will not affect your result in any way.
When you have finished the test you can leave the room but you cannot
re-enter it.
You will then be given your results by the test centre staff.
